Hassle-free Home Improvements Print E-mail
Unless you live in a magazine ad, there's something in or around your home that can use a little work.  Home improvement projects can be a lot of work, but they needn't be difficult.

When you make the decision to take on a small renovation, or a complete makeover, there are a few initial steps you can take to make the process run more smoothly.  First, decide whether you want to tackle the project yourself or hire a professional designer/decorator.  Make sure that you have a sensible budget in place, and be prepared to stick to it.  Starting off with a solid plan will help everything else fall into place.

Set Your Budget

For most of us, money is the bottom line.  You need to have a realistic budget in place, before you begin peeling the wallpaper and stripping the paint.  Consider all of the materials, tools, accessories and supplies that you'll need.  Make sure there's also a little extra in your budget to cover any "eventualities".  These are the surprises that can spring up, such as mistakes in your initial choice of paint color and any accidental damages to your home.  If your project is on a somewhat larger scale, you can save money by purchasing materials in bulk from a supplier.

As with everything in life, you need to be prudent and spend your money wisely.  Don't settle for a low price if the quality is second-rate.  Compromising on lower quality just to save a few bucks is no bargain if you have to redo the project a couple of years down the road.  Remember, your home is likely the largest personal investment you'll ever make, so be sure to invest in quality materials.

Seek Professional Help

Some home improvement projects, like a fresh coat of paint or new landscaping, can easily be done on your own.  You can purchase the needed supplies, save a few bucks by renting the tools, and lay on a little elbow grease to get the job done.  If, however, your project seems just too big and complicated and you just don't have the experience, it might be best left to the professionals.  Doing it yourself may seem like a good way to save a few dollars, but any mistakes made today can proved costly in the long run.  Some projects are just best left to the professionals.

Ask around for a good contractor, rather than simply looking around.  Word of mouth is the best form of advertising, so get referrals from your friends.  When people are satisfied with a contractor's work, they'll be more than happy to provide a recommendation.  If you are impressed with work that's been done at a neighbor's house, go ahead and ask for the name of the contractor.

Get the Timing Right

Timing is crucial to the success of any home improvement project.  For example, the rainy season isn't a great time to plan your roof reconstruction.  By choosing the best time for your project, you'll be helping to ensure that you or your contractor will be able to complete the job on schedule.

To minimize the stress factor, always try to plan your home improvement around your life, rather than the other way around. Try to find a time when your work schedule isn't busy, and no one in your family will be preoccupied with projects, exams or presentations.  Home improvement projects can take longer than expected, and there can be unforeseen delays that are completely out of your control.  Give yourself the time that you need to complete the project, and then tack on a little extra time, "just in case".

Your home improvement project will take a lot of work, but it doesn't have to be a big hassle.  With a smart budget, the right help and good timing, your project should run smoothly from start to finish.
